Seit 58 Jahren stehen Tower of Power für Funk- und Soulmusik vom Feinsten. „Wir waren eine Soulband namens The Motowns“, erinnert sich Emilio Castillo. „Rocco war Bassist, ich war dabei und mein Bruder war Schlagzeuger. 1968 lernte ich „Doc“ Kupka kennen und lud ihn zu einem Vorspielen ein. Er kam in die Band und schließlich änderten wir unseren Namen in Tower of Power.“ Der Grund für die Namensänderung war, dass die Band ein bestimmtes Ziel vor Augen hatte. Sie wollte unbedingt im legendären Fillmore Auditorium auftreten, was mit einem Namen wie The Motowns und dem entsprechenden Bühnenoutfit einer Soul-Coverband in Zeiten der “Love Revolution” der Hippie-Bewegung niemals funktioniert hätte. Tower of Power ließen ihre Haare lang wachsen und begannen, eigene Songs zu schreiben, die schließlich zu ihrem Debutalbum werden sollten.
